HomeMy WebLinkAbout062608 PTS MinutesMINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY OF TEMECULA PUBLIC/TRAFFIC SAFETY COMMISSION JUNE 26, 2008 CALL TO ORDER The City of Temecula Public/Tratfic Safety Commission convened in a regular meeting at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, 2008, in the City Council Chambers of Temecula City Hall, 43200 Business Park Drive, Temecula, California. FLAG SALUTE Commissioner Curran led the audience in the Flag salute ROLL CALL Present: Commissioners: Hagel, Ramos, Curran, Youmans and Chairperson Arbogast Absent: None PUBLIC COMMENTS No comments at this time. COMMISSION REPORTS A. Commissioner Hagel informed that he had an opportunity to attend a truck inspection the following day and was impressed with the amount of knowledge that it takes to officially inspect trucks. COMMISSION CONSENT CALENDAR Minutes of Agril 24, 2008 and Mav 22, 2008 RECOMMENDATION: 1.1 Approve the Minutes of April 24, 2008 1.2 Approve the Minutes of May 22, 2008 MOTION: Commissioner Ramos moved to approve the Consent Calendar. Request to Amend Parking Restriction -Via La Colorada South of Camino San Dimas RECOMMENDATION: 2.1 That the Public/Traffic Safety Commission consider the request to amend parking restriction on Via La Colorada and provide direction to staff. Principal Engineer Moghadam provided a staff report (of record). At this time, the public hearing was opened. A. Mr. Rob White, Temecula, requested the restoration of parking on both sides of the street parallel to the slope area; that residents are requesting this change as the parking restriction would be a significant inconvenience; noting that several residents have been ticketed. At this time, the public hearing was closed. After much discussion, it was the consensus of the Commission to approve the residents' request. MOTION: Commissioner Ramos moved to remove the request of the parking restriction. Commissioner Youmans seconded the motion and voice vote reflected unanimous approval. 3. Traffic Engineer's Report By way of handout and overheads, Principal Engineer Moghadam issued a brief report with respect to the status of Commission approved items. With respect to speed bumps behind Walmart (Temecula Parkway), Director of Public Works Hughes noted that he will agendize the issue for a future meeting for the Commission to review. 4. Police Chief's Report By way of handout, Chief Williams provided a brief staff report (of record). With respect to the amount of DUIs, Chairperson Arbogast relayed her desire of a program that will educate the public with the consequences of drinking and driving. Deputy City Manager Yates relayed that he will contact the Office of Traffic Safety at the State level to explore task force opportunities to reach the public with respect to the consequences of drinking and driving. For the Commission, Chief Williams noted that he will have staff explore grant opportunities of educating the public regarding the dangers of drinking and driving. R:\Minutes\PublicTrafficSafetyCommission062608 2 With respect to the new cell phone law, Deputy City Manager Yates advised that a press release will be issued through the local papers and also will be posted on the City's website; advising that the City of Temecula will not be offering a grace period. Chief Williams provided a brief update with respect to the outlaw motorcycle gang. 5. Fire Chief's Report Deputy City Manager Yates advised that Chief Patterson and Chief Fulcher are currently both on incident command teams; advising that there would currently be an unprecedented amount of fires in the State of California; and stated that more weather is on the way for the weekend. ADJOURNMENT At 7:12 p.m. Chairperson Arbogast formally adjourned this meeting to Thursday, July 24, 2008, at 6:00 P.M., in the City Council Chambers, 43200 Business Park Drive, and Temecula.
