PRELIMINARY PAVEMENT DESIGN
Pavement design should be confirmed at the completion of site grading when the subgrade soils are
in -place. This should include sampling and R-Value testing of the actual subgrade soils and an
analysis based upon the anticipated traffic loading.
For a preliminary pavement design, recommendations for pavement design section of asphalt
parking areas are provided below. These values are based on an assumed R-value of 45.
For pavement design, Traffic indexes (TI) of 4.0 and 5.5 were used for the parking areas and auto
driveways, respectively. The preliminary flexible pavement layer thickness is as follows:
