Item No. 3
RACE, EQUITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION COMMISSION
AGENDA REPORT
TO: Race, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (REDI) Commission
FROM: Randi Johl, Executive Director
DATE: January 13, 2022
SUBJECT: Review Existing Youth in Government Program, Consider Opportunities for
Additional Inclusion, and Provide General Recommendations Regarding the Same
PREPARED BY: Randi Johl, Director of Legislative Affairs/City Clerk
RECOMMENDATION: That the Commission review the existing Youth in Government
Program, consider opportunities for additional inclusion, and provide general recommendations
regarding the same.
BACKGROUND: The City Council of the City of Temecula has historically supported
and promoted active youth engagement with City Hall. Current and former Council Members,
including Jeff Comerchero, Maryann Edwards, and Chuck Washington, proactively worked with
the City Clerk's office to actively engage youth of all ages in the community as a part of our overall
civic engagement effort. From participating in Read Across America Day to holding our own
Youth in Government Program, these efforts expand more than decade. As the community has
grown and youth demographics have changed, it is necessary to review related programs to ensure
relevancy and inclusion. As such, it is recommended that the Commission receive an overview of
the City's existing Youth in Government Program and related demographic information and
provide general recommendations to enhance the program through additional inclusionary
methods.

Item No. 4
RACE, EQUITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION COMMISSION
AGENDA REPORT
TO: Race, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (REDI) Commission
FROM: Randi Johl, Executive Director
DATE: January 13, 2022
SUBJECT: Receive Update Regarding 2022 Multicultural Event and Provide General
Recommendations Regarding the Same
PREPARED BY: Randi Johl, Director of Legislative Affairs/City Clerk
RECOMMENDATION: That the Commission receive an update on the 2022 Multicultural
Event and provide general recommendations regarding the same.
BACKGROUND: On September 9, 2021, the Commission considered opportunities to
host a multicultural event in the City of Temecula at the request of Subcommittee Members Mayor
Rahn and Council Member Edwards. While there were many ideas and thoughts shared during the
discussion, the broader concepts of consensus included the following: (1) The single day event
could be a festival of sorts held annually on the weekend closest to May 2 1 " coinciding with World
Cultural Diversity Day; (2) All segments of the community should be made aware of the event and
encouraged to attend or actively participate included (i.e., individuals, children, families, etc.)
based on current demographic data of the community; (3) Activities could include food, drink,
entertainment, and education tied to cuisine, history, and awareness of different cultures and
related norms; (4) There could be an economic, tourism, and resource tie in with the event for local
businesses, service providers, and non -profits. This year World Cultural Diversity Day falls on
Saturday, May 21, 2022. It is recommended that the Commission provide any final
recommendations, including from new commissioners who were not present during the original
discussion, so that the Community Services event staff can move forward with solidifying its plans
and final City Council approval.
