LOS ANGELES July 30, 2001 IN. 355-01 CITY OF TEMECULA 43174 Business Park Drive Temecula, California 92590 Attention: Mr. Ron Parks Subject: Geologic Observations of Bedrock Shears and Structure In Footing and Swimming Pool Excavations, 30623 Jedediah Smith Road, Temecula, Riverside County, California At your request Petra Geotechnical, Inc. (Petra) has visited the property located at 30623 Jedediah Smith Road and provided geologic observations of existing excavations at the subject property. At the time of our visit, the owner Mr. Vince Bean was at the site. The best exposures of the Pauba Formation bedrock were found in the swimming-pool excavation, although similar conditions could be seen within other footings at the site. We observed moderately dipping bedrock of the Pauba Formation in the excavations. The moderately dipping beds are anomalous to regional dips found in the Pauba Formation, except those found in close proximity to faulting. Striated clay beds and seams were observed as shears both along primary bedding withing the Pauba Formation and also as a near-vertical clay shear located at the southern end ofthe pool exyavation. It is our understanding that a fault investigation for the Wildomar fault was conducted at the site; however the fault setback zone is located more than 150 feet southwest of the observed shears. The Wildomar fault is considered active by the State of California. It is our recommendation that the geologic consultant ofrecord evaluate the exposed shears with regard to faulting. This evaluation should include a \ PETRA GEOTECHNICAL, INC. 27620 Oommerce Center Drive. Suite 103 . Temecula . CA 92590 . Tel: (909) 699-6193 . Fax: (909) 699-6197 . petrate@ibm.net ;~~;' " . .
