HomeMy WebLinkAbout060908 CSC MinutesMINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY OF TEMECULA COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION JUNE 9, 2008 CALL TO ORDER The City of Temecula Community Services Commission convened in a regular meeting at 6:00 p.m., on Monday, June 9, 2008, in the City Council Chambers of Temecula City Hall, 43200 Business Park Drive, Temecula, California. ALLEGIANCE Commissioner Hogan led the audience in the flag salute Present: Edwards, Fox, McCracken, Meyler, and Hogan Absent: None PUBLIC COMMENTS No comments at this time. DIVISION REPORTS By way of staff report, Recreation Superintendent Pelletier highlighted on the following: • That the Summer/Fall 2008 Guide to Leisure Activities brochure was mailed to each resident in Temecula on Friday, May 16, 2008 That the Community Services Department held one of its largest Family Fun Night events entitled "Magic Night" which included 185 participants at the Community Recreation Center (CRC) That the entire TCSD staff held its 15f Annual Community Services Department Expo which was very well attended, noting that citizens had an opportunity to take advantage of the early bird registration for summer classes That the official summer/fall registration of classes and activities began on Wednesday, June 4, 2008 That staff continues to finalize summer programs, activities and major special events Chairperson Hogan advised that she did not receive a Guide to Leisure Activities brochure in the mail. In response to Chairperson Hogan's comment, Recreation Superintendent Pelletier advised that she will explore why she did not receive a brochure in the mail and relayed that she would be happy to supply her with a brochure. R: CSC/minutes/060908 Cultural Arts Administrator Betz provided a staff report as follows: • That May was an extremely busy month at the Temecula Valley Museum; noting that the Museum completed its 3'~ grade history contest • That the Old Town Community Theater had 3,562 patrons attend 20 ticketed events and an additional 1,000 attended non-ticketed events • That Live at the Merc in conjunction with Bill Gould of Full Value Entertainment has begun its live music on Friday nights which has been successful • That onsite concessions (beer and wine) are up and running at the Merc • That in the month of May the Imagination Workshop hosted over 2,000 patrons • That the Merc will host exhibits by Durre Wasseem from May 9th -June 22nd • That Lyndon Travers will host his exhibits at the Merc from June 27 through August 10th • That the Children's Museum parking lot hosted a Children's Matsuri on Sunday, June 1, 2008, noting that there were over 3,000 attendees • That the traveling arts carnival begun its first show at the CRC noting that there were over 1,200 attendees Commissioner McCracken expressed his enthusiasm with respect to the Children's Museum. The Commission relayed their amazement with the high attendance for the cultural arts programs offered. Development Services Administrator McCarthy highlighted on the following: • That the Escallier House and Barn were relocated on Thursday, June 5 • That the Temecula Community Center (TCC) expansion will go out to bid in the near future • That the YMCA will be issued their building permit in the next few days • That the Citywide Clean Up was held on Saturday, May 17th and was very successful • That Wolf Creek Park and Wolf Creek Trail Park were dedicated on Friday, May 13th Maintenance Superintendent Harrington highlighted on the following: • That the Maintenance Division recently detailed Temeku Hills Park in preparation of the 15S Annual Community Services Department Expo • That the Maintenance Division recently detailed the Imagination Workshop which included repairing various exhibits, painting and cleaning • That the Maintenance division repaired a failing section of the City Hall parking lot • That the carpets at City Hall and maintenance facility were cleaned • That staff worked with the Fire Department to install a security system at Roripaugh Ranch Fire Station • That the Maintenance Division will be making minor repairs and will restripe the Community Recreation Center Parking lot • That the Maintenance Division will also be replacing the plastic rail fence at Rotary Park Commissioner Edwards commended Maintenance Superintendent Harrington with respect to all the upgrades at the Community Recreation Center (CRC). R: CSC/minutes051208 CONSENT CALENDAR MINUTES RECOMMENDATION: 1.1 That the Community Services Commission approve the minutes of the April 14, 2008 Commission meeting 1.2 That the Community Services Commission approve the minutes of the March 10, 2008 Commission meeting 1.3 That the Community Services Commission approve the minutes of the May 23, 2008 Commission meeting MOTION: Commissioner Edwards moved to approve staff recommendation. Commissioner Fox seconded the motion and voice vote reflected aaaroval with the exception of Commissioner Meyler and Edwards who abstained from the March 10, 2008 meeting. 2. Summer Pros~rams and Events RECOMMENDATION: 2.2 That the Community Services Commission receive and file a report on the 2008 Summer Programs and Events. Recreation Superintendent Pelletier highlighted on the 4`h of July, 2008 Extravaganza and the Summer Aquatics Program. Recreation Supervisor Lawrence, by way of overheads, reported on the Summer Day Camp Program offered at the Community Recreation Center (CRC). Recreation Supervisor Adkisson-Flohr and Senior Recreation Leader Jay, by way of overheads, updated the Community Services Commission with the upcoming S.M.A. R.T. events. By way of overheads, Senior Recreation Coordinator Adamiak also updated the Community Services Commission with an overview of the upcoming summer events such as the following: The F.A.M Program will be held on Monday nights beginning July 7`" through August 25'"; that this event will be held at the Community Recreation Center (CRC) and will host family fun and activities, games, arts and crafts. That the second Annual Aglow in the Park will be held on July 11`h; that this event will be held at the Ronald Reagan Sports Park and includes the first movie in the Movies in the Park Series; that this year's theme is "Surfin USA"!, noting that the event will include arts and crafts, audience games, food vendors, hot air balloons and the movie. R: CSC/minutes051208 Administrative Assistant Zigler by way of handout, updated the Commission with the upcomin~q Annual Summer Sunsets Film and Concert Series beginning July 10'" and ending August 22" ; advising that concerts are held Thursday evenings at the Temecula Amphitheater and include a different band each week and clowns to entertain the kids; on Friday evenings, a family oriented movie is shown, rotating to various park sites throughout the City, noting that the event includes arts, crafts, group activities and a DJ. The Harveston series will take place on Wednesdays. At this time, a movie made by the Teen Camp was shown. The Community Services Commission commended staff for such an extraordinary venue. It was the consensus of the Community Services Commission to receive and file this report. 3. Community Recreation Center Rehabilitation 2008 RECOMMENDATION: 3.2 That the Community Services Commission receive and file the report on the Community Recreation Center Rehabilitation. By way of overheads, Maintenance Superintendent Harrington provided a staff report with respect to the Community Services Center's Rehabilitation. The Community Services Commission commended Maintenance Superintendent Harrington and his staff for the center's rehabilitation. It was the consensus of the Community Services Commission to receive and file this report. COMMISSIONER REPORT No reports at this time. Director of Community Services Director commended his staff for the great programs. ADJOURNMENT At 6:48 p.m. Chairperson Hogan adjourned this meeting to the next regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, July 14, 2008, at 6:00 p.m., in the City Council Chambers, 43200 Business Park Drive, and Temecula.
