Parker, Deputy Director of Community Services RECOMMENDATION: That the Community Services Commission: Select a member of the Community Services Commission to serve as a liaison to the Temecula Teen Council. Select a member of the Community Services Commission to serve as a liaison to the Sports Council. BACKGROUND: It is recommended that the Community Services Commission select a Commissioner to serve as liaison to the Temecula Teen Council and another Commissioner to serve as liaison to the Sports Council. The intent of these liaison appointments is to foster and encourage communication between the two ad-hoc Councils, the Community Services Commission and the Department. ITEM NO. 3 CITY OF TEMECULA AGENDA REPORT TO: FROM: DATE: Community Services Commission Shawn D, Nelson, Director of Community Services January 3, 1996 SUBJECT: Temecula Teen Council Status Report PREPARED BY: ~r~Julie Crowe-Pelletier, Recreation Superintendent RECOMMENDATION: That the Community Services Commission: Receive and file the Temecula Teen Council Status Report. DISCUSSION: In December of 1992, the City of Temecula officially formed the Temecula Teen Council. The primary purpose of the Teen Council was to allow teen representatives from each of the local schools an opportunity to help plan, program and implement teen activities that were to be offered by the City of Temecula. It is the City's belief that if local teens play an active role in determining the types of programs offered to them, that program participation will be of interest and that the greatest needs of the teen population will be served. The Teen Council meetings are conducted at the Temecula Community Recreation Center on the first and third Thursday evening of each month from 7:00 p.m.- 8:30 p.m. The meetings are open to the general public and all teens are encouraged to attend. City staff member, John Vandenburg attends each meeting for the primary purpose of encouraging active participation and to provide guidance to the Council, The Teen Council has determined that each school must have at least two representatives actively serving on the Council. Each Council member helps in promoting programs and special events at the school campus they attend by distributing fiyers and making announcements on the P.A. system. As "new" Teen Council members are needed to represent local schools, an established recruitment process takes place. Appointed officers of the Council play a vital role in conducting the meetings and encouraging participation. Attached are many of the activities and special events that will be offered by the Community Services Department through the dedication and efforts of the Temecula Teen Council members.
