BACKGROUND: On July 1, 2001, the City of Temecula successfully completed the

Ranch consists of approximately 1,769 single-family residences and about 5,000 new Temecula
citizens. As a "welcome to Temecula" for our new residents, the City of Temecula hosted a
celebration at the Vail Ranch Middle School on Sunday, July 1, 2001 between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m.
About 600 Vail Ranch residents participated in the event throughout the day.
The festivities began with Mayor Comerchero, Mayor Pro-Tem Roberts, and the City Manager,
Shawn Nelson welcoming Vail Ranch as a pad of the City. County Supervisor Bob Buster was also
on hand to speak to the crowd, as was Bob Ritchie, one of the Vail Ranch residents who was
instrumental in pursuing annexation for his community. Mr. Ritchie's daughter surprised her father
with a special award for all of his annexation efforts.
All City Departments, including Police and Fire, were represented at the event. Staff members from
each department were available to answer questions, hand out information about the City and allow
the community to get to know us. The City provided refreshments, a jump for the children, face
painting, balloon art, and other fun things to do. The day was quite successful, giving our new
residents answers to their inquiries, contacts at City Hall for future needs, and a real sense of
welcome to the City.
