S GENWiEMNO.SHL CITY OF TEMECULA AGENDA REPORT TO: Community Services Commission FROM: Herman Parker, Director of Community Services DATE: January 12, 2008 SUBJECT: 2009 Recycling and Litter Reduction Calendar Presentation PREPARED BY: Barbara Smith, Senior Management Analyst Ulf) RECOMMENDATION: That the Community Services Commission recognizes the teachers and students, whose artwork have been selected for the 2009 Recycling and Waste Reduction Calendar. BACKGROUND: The City received two grants this year to promote recycling and waste abatement. One of the grants was from the Department of Conservation (for $25,692) and one from CR&R (for $5,000) our franchised solid waste hauler. We could not have produced the calendar without their financial support. The 2009 calendar's theme is "Going Green" and includes artwork from twenty one (21) students. Along with information about going green the calendar includes the meeting dates of the City Council; Community Services Commission; Planning Commission; Old Town Local Review Board and Public Traffic/Safety Commission. Resident information regarding services provided by CR&R is also provided. We want to acknowledge and thank our judges Commissioners Hogan and McCracken, Dolores Sanchez Badillo from CR&R and Karin Doize, local "Green" advocate, teen representative Ryan Zigler and City staff members Robin Gilliland and Charles Walker. We appreciate their time and their consideration as judging the posters was a very difficult task. This year we had 10 schools participate with 531 students submitting posters. All participating students will receive a 2009 Recycling Calendar and pencil top erasers with a recycling message. All student calendar winners and their teachers have been invited to this Commission Meeting tonight to be acknowledged. Each student will be presented with their original artwork framed, a gift certificate to the Promenade Mall, participation gifts and two additional calendars to share with family and friends. Teachers of the winning students will also be acknowledged and presented with a gift certificate to the Promenade Mall.
