R:\CSCAGEND2013\ELECTN 2012 2013.doc ITEM NO. 3 CITY OF TEMECULA AGENDA REPORT TO: Community Services Commission FROM: Robin Gilliland, Recreation Supervisor DATE: January 14, 2013 SUBJECT: Sister City Update RECOMMENDATION: That the Community Services Commission receive and file this report with regards to upcoming events, projects and exchanges with our two sister cities. . BACKGROUND: As of January 14, 2013, the City of Temecula, along with the Temecula Sister City Association has had an ongoing, successful relationship with both Leidschendam-Voorburg, the Netherlands and Daisen, Japan. 2013 marks the 20' anniversary of the relationship with Leidschendam- Voorburg and 2014 will mark 20 years with Daisen. Student Exchanges: On alternating years, students from our local middle schools and high schools travel to their "sister" schools. During spring break of each alternating year, 20-25 high school students travel to the Netherlands. On the opposite years, 10-12 middle school students travel to Japan. Each of the students resides with host families while in country and travel to many historically significant places. This is most certainly a life-changing experience. Each summer, Daisen sends 10-12 students to Temecula. While here, they too reside with a local family. They experience many different "American" traditions including Halloween, baseball, a bonfire at the beach and swimming at the CRC. Students from the Netherlands come to Temecula on the same year our students travel there. They too reside with the student and their family with which they will stay during their trip. Again, these students also experience as many "American" traditions that can fit into a 10 day stay. Adult Exchanges: Each December, a delegation of elected as well as citizens from Daisen visit Temecula. They too experience as much of Temecula as they can in a short 5 days. The highlight of their trip is Santa's Electric Light Parade in which they participate. In and around September 11 th , guests from the Netherlands often come and attend our 9-11 ceremony and often take part in it. Other Exchanges: Over the years, both Temecula Police Department and Fire Department have had many successful exchanges with the Netherlands. Additional information will be provided in a presentation this evening.
